A queer space on campus
In 2022, the successfully advocated for and fought to establish a safe and accessible queer space on the Nathan campus. Now, The Rainbow Room can be accessed from 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday, in as a safe and inclusive space for LGBTQIA+ Griffith students.
Our mission
The Rainbow Rooms' goal is to create an accessible, sensory-friendly, safe space for LGBTQIA+ students at Brisbane South (Nathan). Too many queer spaces are inaccessible or unsafe for disabled students, and it was important that this room is a safe space for everyone. The Rainbow Society is committed to making necessary changes to make their club a safe space for all identities.
Furthermore, while safe spaces like the library are on campus, there must be more student common rooms and study spaces where students can feel truly comfortable. This space will be left open during the day outside of club events so people have a space to meet other queer students. Within the room, there is a kitchenette with a microwave, and it is in an accessible location with accessible room facilities, including sensory-friendly lighting.
The Rainbow Society has created a safe and welcoming space for everyone, stating, "You can only have equality for all LGBTQIA+ students if all LGBTQIA+ students can access a safe place". Having an established room that is accessible and sensory-friendly is the first step for them to improve their club. As they settle into the space, there is a plan to make necessary changes and improvements for students.
The room is open for use during the day; there will be a notice on the door when an event is in progress. Students can also keep an eye on for events, or feel free to email us at rainbowsociety@griffith.edu.au.
