  1. Discuss the potential research project with a Griffith academic or your existing Griffith contact. You can use  to search for an academic expert in your field of interest.
  2. If the research project is feasible, confirm the project's details, including the scholarship funding that you, the industry partner, will provide. Where applicable, Griffith has funding available to support industry-funded scholarships; ask your academic contact to find out more.
    1. For projects to be undertaken by your employee(s), check their equivalent qualifications for HDR program admission.
  3. For projects not undertaken by a company employee, Griffith will advertise the project and recruit a doctoral candidate.
  4. Once admitted, a PhD candidate commences the research project.

Funding models

The cost of the PhD scholarship will be shared between Griffith University and the industry partner. The industry partner contribution may be eligible for the

Griffith Industry PhD Scholarship provides candidates $50K per year, co-funded by Griffith and industry for up to 3.5 years.  This co-funding starts at a $25K/yr investment from you and $25k/yr from Griffith.

Griffith will also provide a tuition fee scholarship and Overseas Student Health Cover to international candidates, or a É«ÇéÍøÕ¾ Fee Offset for domestic candidates.

Invest in your existing staff and bring new knowledge to your organisation by supporting an Industry PhD. This opportunity brings new knowledge to your organisation and helps to retain and recruit the brightest minds.

You will work with a Griffith academic to develop a suitable research project. The employee continues their employment package and is attached to your organisation whilst undertaking the PhD.  Griffith may offset the cost of tuition for full-time students for the duration of the degree and provide Health Cover to international students where their employer does not cover this.

Industry partners can provide top-up scholarships or other types of funding, such as project support. Examples include material or equipment costs, as well as travel or publication expenses. These scholarships are generally offered as one-off and can be paid annually. The amount offered can vary and often depends on the project.

These options can be discussed once you have confirmed a Griffith academic to supervise the PhD Project.

I think one of the great things as well is that you are actually supported financially within the industry PhD and what's great about that is it kind of just gives you a bit of breathing room to focus on your work. But I really like that I get to learn so many different things and try so many different things as part of this. So to me, an industry PhD was the ideal path for me to take. Because I get to practice and learn new things in a really supportive environment.

External supervision

We encourage our industry partners to be part of the industry PhD process. We value the experience of our organisations to help design the research project and provide practice-based expertise as an external supervisor.

There is no qualification requirement for an external supervisor to be registered, and external supervisors may be appointed to provide specific industry (rather than academic) expertise.

Upon appointment to a supervisory team, external supervisors will be provided with information regarding Griffith policies and procedures for PhD candidature and supervision.
