Julie Fragar: Next Witness
2 May - 5 September 2019
Between 2016 and 2017 Julie Fragar attended a number of criminal trials in the Supreme Court of Queensland as an observer from the public gallery. Fragar was interested in the moments where a person's private life becomes open to public scrutiny and she analysed the way in which a court case compresses a person's biographical history into a short, hard narrative. Based on this experience, Fragar created Next Witness.
The five large scale paintings in Next Witness cut across time, space and perspectives, to consider—all at once—a crime's circumstances, the courtroom as a very specific social space, and the inextricable role of the public as witness.
